Nanook – the boys on the block that everyone knows

So – let’s admit it. Nanook, the 5 piece based in Nuuk and Copenhagen, have dominated the music charts in Greenland since their debut in 2009.

Nanook is well-appreciated all over Greenland and have recently released their third studio-album “Pissaaneqaqisut” (Those who have great power)” – the band’s name comes from the old inuit religion’s god bear, the Bear of All Bears Nanook.

Even though the line-up has changed more than once over the years, steady front-men Christian and Frederik Elsner have been able to maintain the very distuinguished and up-beat sound that is Nanook – cathcy and heartfelt lyrics appreciating Greenlandic nature and life (trust me, these booys have a talent for writing sing-alongs!)

So, like it or not, if you want to get around the music scene in Greenland, you will have to get around Nanook too. Even then, the fact that all their lyrics are in Greenlandic does not limit their career to Greenland. Nanook has been booked for several festivals and the likes in Europe, Canada and the U.S.

Have a listen of your own, here’s their latest single “Qiimassutissarput Aajuna” from their latest album:

And for those of you who aren’t fluent in Greenlandic, the band has published a set of translations of their lyrics on their website:
